Snorkeling & Tidepools at Maeda Flats

Tuesday, June 24, 2014

Let me introduce you to one of my very favorite places on this island. In fact, it is one of my very favorite places anywhere.

I'm pretty sure the pictures provide all the explanation necessary as to why this is such a beloved place. Turquoise water. White sand. Gorgeous views. Need I say more?

Ok, I will. Check this place out at low tide!

When the tide goes out, you can walk out onto the reef (hopefully staying off the living creatures). If you are not inclined to snorkel or scuba dive, you can simply look down into the tide pools and admire the vibrant reef and its inhabitants. While standing ankle deep in water, we've looked down to see damsel fish, angel fish, lion fish, eels, and hundreds of others we can't name.

Some of the best tide pools are hidden in sea caves.

Nothing quite matches the experience of swimming with the fish, though.

The warm shallow water is protected by the reef from strong waves and currents, making it perfect for little ones, too.

We promise to take you if you come visit!
